HOKA Clifton 8 - Q&A With Radio 1 DJ Sarah Story

We caught up with Radio 1 DJ, Sarah Story, to talk about running, music and to see what she thinks of the new HOKA Clifton 8 running shoe. Sarah has also designed a bespoke mix exclusively for our runners which is available now for live streaming or download on Spotify.

You started running during the first lockdown. How is the training going since we last spoke?

As life has started to go back to normal-ish I’ve not had as much time to dedicate to training as in lockdown, but I’m trying to fit in 3 sessions a week whether that’s running or home workouts online. I definitely feel like running is getting easier now and I can go much further.

Now that travel restrictions have lifted in the UK, do you have any exciting new music projects lined up?

Yes I’ve got quite a few things lined up which I’m really excited about. I launch my brand new Radio 1 Friday night show ‘Future Dance’ in September and have some brilliant gigs coming up playing at Creamfields, Printworks in London and supporting Fatboy Slim in November. It’s so nice to be able to travel and DJ again!

How does running fit in with your lifestyle and music career?

I work most weekends now so it’s pretty difficult to exercise when I’m travelling. I try to exercise through the week and in the morning, if I leave it until the afternoon I find it such a struggle to push myself to go out. I try to mix up my exercise sessions with a combination of running and exercise classes online. I find that running really clears my mind and even just a 20 minute jog can really help with my productivity throughout the rest of the day.

Have you any races planned or do you prefer just to run on your own?

I prefer to run on my own as I find if I try and run with a friend I end up chatting and not focusing on the run haha. I don’t think I’m at the level to compete yet….but maybe one day...you never know!

What music have you been listening to recently on your runs? Do you have any good recommendations?

It’s always dance music! I need a fast beat to keep me motivated. Artists I’m loving at the minute are Cinthe, Maxinne, Monki, TSHA, ABSOLUTE. India Jordan, Dance System, Ewan McVicar & Bklava. Here’s a couple of tracks I would highly recommend to listen to when you’re running -

ABSOLUTE. Feat Bklava - U4IA

TSHA - Power

Ewan McVicar - Tell Me Something Good

Dance System - All I Wanna Do

Logic1000 - I won’t forget

Propsa - Want Need Love

You’ve created a new playlist called the Runner’s Running Mix on Spotify, specifically for the SportsShoes running community. Can you tell us more about this latest mix?

I wanted to put a playlist together that would map out the journey of the run from warming up, powering through the toughest section to cooling down. Starting with The Blessed Madonna’s remix of Jungle ‘Keep Moving’, I think it’s a great track to warm up to and the track title is perfect! It’s got an uplifting/disco vibe to it which should ease you into your run nicely. I had to put some Jayda G in there as her track ‘Both of Us’ was one of my favourite lockdown tracks of 2020. The music then moves into a more house/ravey vibe with a track from Logic1000 who I’ve been supporting lots when I’ve covered for Annie Mac & Danny Howard on Radio 1. I’ve also included India Jordan and Ben Hemsley who have both been smashing it over the last year. I squeezed a bit of Drum & Bass in there as I absolutely love the Shy FX & 45 Roller edit of Tina Turner’s ‘I can’t stand the rain’. The mix then moves into a cool down with another huge track from The Blessed Madonna ‘Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing) which everyone was loving coming out of lockdown. I finish the playlist with a classic from Orbital ‘Belfast’, this is such an emotive track perfect for cooling down and gathering your thoughts.

Let’s talk about the HOKA Clifton 8 - a lightweight, durable and everyday cushioned shoe. What do you like most about the shoe? Any favourite features? What kind of runs have you been wearing them for?

I find with some running trainers they can make my feet look big but I love how neat these trainers look. They're super lightweight and I feel like if you're out for the day you could wear these on your jog to work/gym class and then wear them with a nice pair of jeans throughout the day. I've been wearing these when doing shorter runs (5/6km) and find them really comfortable.
