How to choose the right Running Jacket
In wet and blustery conditions, warm and waterproof running gear is essential to keep you dry and protected. A good running jacket is a key part of every runner's wardrobe, and should protect you from the elements while maintaining breathability – without restricting performance.
ㅤ
Wind and rain protection.
Your running jacket should provide a level of protection from wind and rain. This protection ranges from water resistant fabrics which keep out light showers, to 100% waterproof and wind blocking fabrics such as Gore-Tex and Windstopper which provide full protection from the elements in more extreme conditions. Look out for the following features:
Waterproof or water resistant fabric, depending on the level of protection you need.
Wind blocking technologies to minimise wind chill.
Stow away hoods
Taped seams which do not let in water
Elasticated or adjustable cuffs to keep out wind and rain.
Storm flaps for added protection behind zips.
The waterproof rating of fabric is measured in millimetres according to a “hydrostatic head” test. This involves testing the fabric in laboratory conditions by stretching the fabric over a sensor and applying a column of water – the hydrostatic head. This is measured in millimetres up to 20,000mm. The higher the hydrostatic head, the more waterproof the jacket, and its fabric is designated as waterproof to that level. A jacket with a waterproof rating of 1,000 to 5,000 hydrostatic head (HH) will resist light rain and showers, whereas jackets with a rating upwards of 5,000HH are classed as highly waterproof.
ㅤ
Optimum Breathability
The perfect running jacket should provide weather protection, but also without causing overheating, and should be constructed from not only protective, but breathable fabrics allowing maximum breathability. Always layer your running jacket with a moisture wicking baselayer. A good running jacket will feature the following:
Technical fabrics which allow moisture to evaporate and wick away sweat as well as being wind and water resistant.
Mesh panels and plenty of vents in key sweat areas
2 way zippers which allow added ventilation
Mesh inner linings to help sweat evaporate.
ㅤ
Maximum Performance
Your running jacket should protect without hindering performance. It should be as lightweight as possible, in an ergonomic and slim running cut, delivering maximum freedom of movement. Also look for jackets which are easily packable and can be carried in changeable conditions. Jackets with removable sleeves are also a great solution in unpredictable weather.
ㅤ
Safety and Practicality
Bear in mind safety and practicality when choosing your running jacket. Will you need somewhere to store essential items? Are you likely to be running at night or in poor visibility conditions? Look out for the following features.
Plenty of pockets, preferably with zips, to securely stow essential items such as your keys or phone.
High visibility fabrics for safety in low light conditions
Reflective detailing.
