The Cost Of Competing: The World’s Cheapest and Most Expensive Marathons

The Cost Of Competing: The World’s Cheapest and Most Expensive Marathons

Marathon tourism is a growing trend. Instead of booking a beach or city break, runners are scanning international race calendars and packing their trainers for bucket-list marathons on every continent. Ticking off Tokyo one spring, Boston the next, and maybe Reykjavik under the midnight sun the summer after that.

However, the race entry is rarely the whole story. Entry fees, hotel prices, and day-to-day spending all vary wildly from one race to the next, meaning that the total bill for a marathon trip can really range.

Some destinations stretch a budget much further than others: a race that looks expensive on paper can turn out to be the better deal once accommodation and a week of meals are added in, while a seemingly cheap entry elsewhere quickly balloons. It's worth weighing all of that up before booking your next marathon trip.

To help those interested in travelling to their next marathon, we’ve crunched the data to reveal which marathons are the most expensive and the best bargains to take part in.

For over 175 marathons worldwide, we looked at the international entry fee, average hotel costs per night, and local transport costs per day and then ranked them to reveal the cheapest and most expensive events for runners. If you’re travelling for your marathon then flight costs are a likely additional spend that you’ll need for factor in, but as these vary based on where you fly from we have omitted that data point from the research.

World’s Most & Least Expensive Marathons

Honolulu Marathon tops the global rankings as the most expensive marathon to take part in at £547, a total driven less by its entry fee and more by Hawaii's high hotel costs. It's a price tag that does bring a beautiful running experience though, with the route passing Waikiki Beach, around the iconic Diamond Head volcanic crater and along the Pacific coastline and finishing back in Kapiolani Park.

San Francisco Marathon (£510) isn't far behind in terms of costs, and its course arguably justifies the spend. Runners cross the Golden Gate Bridge at mile ten, taking in sweeping views of the Bay before looping through Golden Gate Park and finishing on the Embarcadero. Zermatt Marathon (£492) completes the top three, with the Swiss alpine race commanding some of Europe's highest accommodation prices to match its breathtaking Matterhorn backdrop.

American cities dominate the top list, with ten of the top 15 most expensive marathon experiences in the world. Famous marathons in Boston, New York and Chicago all feature alongside some less obvious entries. St. George Marathon in Utah, perhaps the least globally recognisable name on the list, is at ninth place with a predicted cost of £381, largely due to its remote location and limited, pricey accommodation options.

Outside of the US, London Marathon (£384) places eighth and Queenstown Marathon (£350) is fourteenth, where New Zealand's well-known adventure tourism destination commands premium hotel prices to match its spectacular alpine vineyard course.

For runners who want the miles without the price tag, the world's cheapest marathons are almost all in Asia. India claims the top two spots, with Kolkata Marathon (£63.55) and Delhi Marathon (£72.44) offering total costs that wouldn't cover a single night's hotel in Honolulu.

The two European entries in the cheapest 15, Bulgaria’s Sofia Marathon (£98.17) and Warsaw Marathon (£99.97) in Poland, show the value on offer in Eastern Europe, where low entry fees combined with affordable hotels and minimal transport costs allow for a full marathon weekend for under £100.

Europe’s Most & Least Expensive Marathons

Within Europe, Switzerland claims the top spots when it comes to marathon costs. Zermatt Marathon tops the continent at £492, and the price tag reflects a genuinely unusual race: the course climbs through Alpine trails with the Matterhorn as a near-constant backdrop, finishing in the car-free village at over 1,600 metres above sea level. Geneva Marathon (£322) and Lausanne Marathon (£292) complete a Swiss trio in the top six.

Geneva’s course weaves between countryside and city before finishing on the Mont-Blanc Bridge with views of the iconic Jet d’Eau fountain, while Lausanne takes runners through the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva and finishes at the Olympic Museum.

London Marathon (£384) is Europe’s second most expensive, where one of the highest entry fees on the continent combines with city-centre hotel prices to push the total up. The course itself is part of the appeal, a 26-mile tour past Tower Bridge, the Cutty Sark and Buckingham Palace, with one of the biggest and loudest crowds in world running.

Paris Marathon (£308) starts on the Champs-Élysées, sweeps past the Louvre and Notre-Dame, and finishes in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe, giving you a guided sightseeing tour at pace. Valencia (£296), which is the 5th most expensive, offers something a little different - it has become one of the fastest marathons in the world, drawing runners chasing personal bests to its flat course.

The pattern at the cheaper end of the European rankings looks very different. Eastern Europe dominates, with Bulgaria, Poland, Serbia and the Baltic states claiming the majority of the 15 most affordable races on the continent.

Each of the three cheapest European races has its own reason to run it beyond the price. Warsaw Marathon (£100) is the oldest marathon in Poland, first held in 1979 under the name “Marathon of Peace” and it kept going even through martial law.

Krakow Marathon (£108) runs through a city that was among the very first places in the world to receive UNESCO World Heritage status, with the start and finish on the Main Market Square and Wawel Royal Castle on the route. Sofia, the cheapest marathon to compete in at £98, has become one of the fastest-growing races in the region and drew over 8,000 runners from 66 countries in 2025. All three come in under £110, which for a marathon in a European city is great value for money.

Part of what makes marathon running so popular and one of the reasons so many people are signing up is that there really is something for every budget. From sub- £65 race weekends in India to £500-plus experiences in Hawaii, the range is huge. With hundreds of events to choose from across every continent, runners don't have to break the bank to tick off a bucket-list race. It’s also important to remember that wherever you end up toeing the start line, the distance and achievement is always the same.

Methodology

Data for 175 marathons globally was analysed – cost of entry, average cost of a hotel for a night and average cost of transport for the day in the location of the marathon. As this research focuses on those that travel for marathons, the cost of registration for international runners was used and sourced from the official marathon websites. The average cost of a hotel and transport was sourced from www.budgetyourtrip.com.

ㅤ

Only marathons where the marathon entry cost could be sourced were included in the final research. If transport data was not available for the specific marathon location, the average cost of transport in the country was used. Where costs were in another currency other than GBP, they were converted at the most current conversion rate.

The costs of transport to the marathon event will also contribute to the total cost, but as that can vary a lot depending on where you are traveling from it was omitted from this research.

All data correct as of April 2026.
