The foam towards the top, and almost in direct comfort with the sole of the foot has cushioning features. This instantly increases comfort on every step. The foam has thicker and stronger parts covering vulnerable areas such as the heel and on the forefoot. This means that heavy and unexpected impacts on the ground will be absorbed, stopping it from reaching the foot.
