History

Leaving school in 1945, Norman Walsh went to work as an apprentice for Fosters Footwear Bolton (Fosters became REEBOK). There he was trained as a specialist maker of athletic shoes for Fosters professional athletes. In 1948 he was selected to make the track spikes for the British Olympic sprint team. In the next decade, Norman's reputation grew as one of the best athletic shoe makers in the country as he was requested by Fosters customers nationally and internationally to make their shoes personally. In 1961 Norman Walsh left Fosters and established his own company Norman Walsh Footwear in Bolton. Norman's creative innovation started to evolve in all aspects of Athletic footwear production by using modern materials such as lightweight nylon and EVA soles instead of leather and rubber with weight savings of approximately 50%. During the 60s, Norman's shoes became the must-have footwear across many sports from rugby, cricket and running. During the 1960's, 70's and 80's, high profile sports stars were seen regularly at Norman's premises, including Rugby stars Alex Murphy, Des Drummond, cricketers Joel Garner, Clive Lloyd, Wrestlers Giant Haystacks, and Big Daddy Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington and Runner Roger Bannister to name a few. In 1970 Norman developed his mountain/fell running footwear originally using a deep cut V-Ripple outsole (Pennine Adder), then he used a moulded football boot soles and eventually produced the PB Trainer with all new pyramid shaped studded rubber. The PB Trainer firmly established itself as the number one Fell running shoe with other variants to follow, Racer, Xtreme, Ultra and Junior. Today, Norman Walsh Footwear still continues to produce Athletic footwear at its own factory in Bolton and is the only British company that still produces British made athletic shoes.

"first class product, perfect for muddy running"

"Great old fashioned fell running shoes. The ultra model will accommodate wider feet than the original. I normally take a size 9.5 in Salomon and inov-8 shoes but actually had to go down half a size in the Walshes. This has made the fit very snug, but without this I found there was excessive heel lift.
The grip is second to none on wet, slippery grass but on roots or rocks they do slide out easily. I found that because the sole is quite stiff compared to other manufacturers of fell shoes, the Walshes had no give and couldn't mould around roots or stones making them quite unstable and easy to turn an ankle in.
On the durability side, the sole lugs do wear down very quickly if you run on any hard surfaces. My usual route is a mixture of moorland, grass tracks and stoney tracks. I found that after only a couple of runs the lugs have already worn down quite a bit.
All in all I'm happy with them as they are brilliant as a short mileage off road shoe that excell on wet slippery, muddy surfaces."

"Great fell shoes and the only ones I have found that fit my wide feet. I have worn many pairs of these but they don't seem to last as long as they used to....or maybe I'm just running more than I used to!"

"Great for cross country training"

"Tried both size 10 and 9, many reports suggest you need larger than usual sizes. I don't agree, you do need to use a normal insole! The insole provided is unnecessarily thick, this causes stability issues, specially on very rough terrain. Even with an ortho lite insole the shoe feels more unstable than most other good spec mountain running shoes that I've tried. Nevertheless the grip is awesome and the shoe generally feels good. 6.5/10"
