We spoke to our SportsShoes.com athlete, Samantha Harrison, to find out more about her favourite pieces of running kit and top recommendations for what to wear for training and racing.

Samantha is one of the UK’s leading distance athletes. Having only taken up running seriously in 2018, she has since represented GB in the World Half Marathon Championships in Poland, 2020. She specialises in track and road running and is now hoping to earn qualification for the marathon event at the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this year.

NIKE ESSENTIAL RUN DIVISION WOMEN'S RUNNING JACKET

This water-resistant jacket is great for those rainy days, but also feels light so can equally be worn on warmer days too. It's reflective, bright colour is clear to see at night time when training in the dark. It also has a long zip, so if you get warm during training you can zip it down as far as you like.

The jacket is cut slightly longer in length, hitting below the hips, so if you usually order a size bigger, you don’t need to. It’s a treat to wear and performs excellently on long runs in wet weather.

NIKE MILER WOMEN’S RUNNING TOP

I love this bright pink running top as it’s my favourite colour and also great to be seen outside when running on the roads. It's fast-drying and light-weight which is what you want when training as you want to feel comfortable and dry throughout your session.

The Nike miler running top is true to size, it fits slightly loose so gives you breathing space, so you don’t get too hot. The material is great, it provides you with a comfortable and light-weight feel. It also has long sleeves to provide optimal coverage.

NIKE SWOOSH MEDIUM SUPPORT WOMEN’S SPORTS BRA

The Nike Swoosh Medium is a great sports bra I like to wear for training and races. They have a wide, comfy strap which makes you feel snug and secure whilst you're training. It's light-weight material makes it suitable for any weather conditions as it is sweat-proof to keep you dry in any conditions. This sports bra is available in a range of bright colours.

NIKE PRO 365 WOMEN’S 5 INCH SHORTS

The Nike Pro 365 5 inch running shorts are my go-to racing shorts and I also use them for certain sessions when training. The soft, stretchy fabric hugs you in comfortable support which is just what you need when doing training sessions, especially in the summertime when it’s warm as you are more prone to sweating.

These shorts tend to run fairly short, so half a size bigger is recommended so they don’t ride up during your workouts. It’s also worth mentioning that they are available in a range of lengths including 3, 5 and 7 inches, depending on personal preference.

ADIDAS WOMEN’S ULTIMATE LONG TIGHT LEGGINGS

Adidas ultimate long tight leggings are my daily leggings I use for any type of training from gym work to long runs, speed sessions and tempo runs. They're a tight fitted, stretchy material that clings to you, but still feel breathable. They’re super comfortable and fit true to size. They do not have a high waist which might put some people off. The reflective shine that the leggings give away are also great to be seen at night time.

NIKE SPARK LIGHTWEIGHT NO-SHOW RUNNING SOCKS

These are my go-to race and training socks that I use daily for training and racing. They are sweat proof, light, comfortable and a close fit ideal for different types of training.

NIKE ZOOM PEGASUS TURBO 2 WOMEN’S RUNNING SHOES

For Training: The Nike Zoom Pegasus Turbo 2 are my daily training trainers that I use for a mixture of long runs, easy runs and speed workouts. These trainers are light and cushioned so are ideal for long runs and faster workouts. The foam at the bottom of the foot gives you that lift to take off and encourages you to run fast.

NIKE ZOOMX NEXT% VAPORFLY RUNNING SHOES

For Racing: The Nike Zoom X are my favourite racing trainers. I also wear these in some training sessions when doing longer runs or speed workouts. The reason I love them is because they provide you with a fast, light feel with a lot of energy and comfort - they almost feel like little trampolines strapped to your feet. They really do provide some extra bounce in your stride and since the upper mesh is so thin, your feet won't get overheated because they’re so breathable. The material of the uppers of the shoe is not water-resistant, so bear in mind when running in wet conditions, as your socks could get soggy and the rest of your run might not be very comfortable.

This shoe has a carbon-fibre plate which enhances speed and provides that light-weight feeling of moving fast. The foam in the mid-sole makes the shoe feel bouncy and responsive. I also love the colour of these shoes as they are bright and unique, which makes them stand out from any other type of trainer.

In terms of sizing, they feel slightly tight around the toe box for me, so I decided to order half a size bigger. I'm usually a size 5, however, I ordered a size 5.5 in these and they fit the shape of my feet perfectly.
