History

SportsShoes.com was established in 1982 by Bruce Bannister, a professional footballer with an international career spanning over 18 years.

Bruce Bannister - the man who started it all

As a striker, Bruce appeared in over 500 league games, and scored over 200 goals. He was part of the famous "Smash and Grab" partnership with Alan Warboys at Bristol Rovers in the early 1970s before finishing his professional career in France in 1981.

As an executive member of the Professional Footballers Association for 10 years, Bruce looked after the interests of players and fans, and it was during this time he recognised a need for a retail store dedicated to the specialised needs of sports men and women.

SportsShoes Unlimited - a passion for sport

Armed with his passion for sport and the knowledge and experience to understand the needs of athletes of all standards and levels, Bruce set up SportsShoes Unlimited, the largest SportsShoe retail outlet in the world. His aim was to provide the most comprehensive range of technical sports footwear and clothing, covering the widest possible range of sports and every major sporting brand.

Crucially, in contrast to other sports retailers, SportsShoes provided a friendly and knowledgeable environment whereby customers could receive expert advice from an experienced team of staff before buying.

In 1985, SportsShoes launched its hugely successful mail order service and later became one of the first retailers to launch an e-commerce website and began trading online.

SportsShoes.com - the future

Today we are SportsShoes.com and fulfil thousands of orders each week, as well as continuing to provide an excellent in-store service. With over 25 years of experience behind us, our objective remains the same, and we're committed to providing the same superb service, combined with the widest and most comprehensive product range at the best possible value.

BRADFORD’S ICONIC SPORTSSHOES STORE SET TO CLOSE

Sportsshoes, Bradford’s oldest independent sportswear store is set to close after nearly 30 years of trading.

The family run, sportswear retailer, which also operates online and mail order, will close the doors of its 16,000 square foot retail unit, on Hall Ings in the city centre, for the final time at the end July, following the termination of its lease agreement with landlord and car park operator, NCP.

The store, which was set up by ex-professional footballer and Bradford City striker, Bruce Bannister in 1982 to offer an exceptional selection of proper sports footwear, clothing and accessories, has grown into an institution for the region’s sports lovers. The store has prided itself on offering unrivalled expertise, and extensive product ranges at unbeatable prices for the last three decades.

Despite the store closure, sports enthusiasts across the region can still purchase sports clothing and footwear from a selection of over 3,000 products, from leading brands such as Adidas and Asics to Nike and Saucony, at www.sportsshoes.com.

Due to continued sales growth, the store’s 14 staff will all be given the opportunity to work at the firm’s head office and distribution warehouse in Shipley, West Yorkshire.

Unlike other recent high street store closures, Sportsshoes has seen year on year sales growth at both national and international levels, resulting in the firm doubling its workforce in recent years at its head office and warehouse in Shipley to over 80 people. The firm currently sells over a quarter of a million pairs of trainers per year and dispatches over 350,000 orders worldwide per year, through its online and mail order division.

Commenting on the store closure, Sportsshoes chairman, Bruce Bannister said:

“As a Yorkshire businessman, born and bred in Bradford, I’m passionate about my home city and the store is close to my heart. So it is with great regret that we have to announce the closure of our Sportsshoes retail unit. We will be closing our doors at the end of July, as the renewal proposals were just not commercially viable. Our main priority is the future welfare of our dedicated staff and our loyal local customers.”

Sportsshoes managing director, Brett Bannister added:

“Whilst this marks the end of an era, we are extremely confident about the future of the business. We have a growing customer base that extends from Bradford to countries around the world, thanks to the huge success of our mail order and online business www.sportsshoes.com.”
