RACE RECAP: The Fellsman Ultra

The Fellsman isn’t just another ultra-distance race. It’s part of British endurance history.

Regarded as the UK’s oldest ultra fell/off-road events, the Fellsman has been testing runners and walkers against the Yorkshire Dales since 1962 - long before trail running became fashionable.

This is an event that strips everything back to what really matters: the route, the terrain, the weather, and your ability to keep moving forward when all three turn against you.

What makes the Fellsman so tough?

The Route, the terrain, the test

From the full 61-mile route to the 30-mile Fellsman Dart, the challenge is as much mental as it is physical. The full Fellsman climbs over 11,000 feet from Ingleton to Threshfield, a point-to-point route serviced by 25 hilltop and roadside checkpoints. The Dart covers a shorter but still demanding 30-mile journey from Redshaw to Threshfield, climbing over 4,200 feet and supported by 13 checkpoints along the way.

Taking on classic fell terrain, the Yorkshire Dales deliver a raw and uncompromising course. Endless climbs, technical descents, exposed ridgelines, and open moorland define the landscape, with conditions that can change in an instant. This year, it wasn’t freezing rain or driving wind - it was relentless heat that became the defining test.

On terrain like this, efficiency becomes just as important as endurance. The Fellsman demands self-sufficiency, resilience, and respect for the environment it crosses. Large sections of the course are unmarked, placing a premium on navigation, pacing, and decision-making as runners work their way towards the finish. Over long hours in remote conditions, fatigue builds steadily.

Despite its legendary status, even on its 62nd edition, the Fellsman has stayed true to its roots. Across the Yorkshire Dales, a network of incredible checkpoints manned by scout groups and volunteers forms the backbone of the event. Carefully positioned, meticulously run, and powered by an extraordinary collective effort, they offer refuge exactly when it’s needed most. In the harshest moments on the hills, they become a lifeline.

Every brew and every detail is delivered with a level of organisation and care that few modern events can match.
