How long does it take to burn off Ice Cream?

Even if you’re strictly devoted to your fitness and nutrition plan, an ice cream can be too hard to turn down in the heat. Which for some of us, could lead to a long summer filled with Cornetto-induced guilt.

Not to worry though, as we’ve teamed up with personal trainer Aimee Victoria Long to provide her tips on how to stay in shape throughout the summer months, without forgoing any treats. In addition to our very own guide, whether you’re Calippo crazy or a Magnum maniac, find out exactly how much exercise is needed to burn off your favourite ice lolly.

"Keeping to your gym routine or training plan can be super hard during the summer months” Aimee explains.

“There are so many impromptu distractions even I find myself making excuses to miss a session: it’s too hot to workout; the place I am training doesn’t have air-conditioning; I would rather see my friends because we don’t often have weather like this; I will just go to training later. And it’s not only me, during the warmer weather, numbers in my classes tend to drop slightly and clients cancel last minute (especially in the evenings) to see friends or go out with their partner".

In addition to searching for an excuse to skip a workout during the summer, it’s also comforting to know that even personal trainers can’t help but give in to the temptation of something a little gluttonous:

“There are also plenty of food temptations in the summer” Aimee admits. “With tasty hot dogs and burgers at BBQs, coffee shops bringing out summer menus filled with sweet and creamy ice frappes and keeping on top of your thirst with cold fizzy drinks. Oh and of course, ice creams! I am literally obsessed with ice-cream, I should actually be a Ben & Jerry’s ambassador the amount I eat, and that’s just in the winter months”.

However, in moderation, you don’t need to wildly up the ante and exercise more because of the extra Twister or two. Aimee advises “Simply stay aware of the extra treats you eat and make the most of the sunshine in an active way. There are plenty of fun ways to keep your summer treats and exercise in balance, without feeling like you’re doing extra work. Whether it’s a game of volleyball, swimming in the sea or a simple bike ride. I personally love going on long walks in the summer, I live fairly close to Richmond and it’s ideal to take the dogs on a long stroll. It’s all about balance, there’s no point restricting yourself and being unhappy”.
