How to choose the best Running Backpack

Whether it’s for your daily commute or if you’re running an ultra, here’s how to choose the right running backpack for your needs, so you don’t have to worry about leaving anything at home, or being distracted by something that’s not suited to your run, and is more of a hindrance than a help.

WHAT’S YOUR PACK FOR?

It sounds obvious, but how you’re using your pack is important. Are you run-commuting or heading off an adventure ultra? Is your priority hydration, transporting key essentials - or both? Whatever your pack’s purpose, your key consideration is always that it should be as small and light as you can make it - all whilst still carrying what you need. All of the other considerations flow from there.

STORAGE CAPACITY

How much do you need to carry with you? If you’re run-commuting, you’re going to need to carry work clothes, toiletries and other essentials. Whereas if you’re racing, you probably want to carry only the absolute bare necessities. A capacity of around 20 litres is a good starting point if you need to carry a fair amount of kit, whereas if you’re aiming to stay light and fast, look for packs of around 10L and under.

COMPARTMENTALISE EVERYTHING

Whether you’re heading to work or racing, organisation is everything and generally, the more compartments your pack has the better to allow you to easily get to your possessions. Also, think about items that you need to be able to easily access on the run, such as gels or electrolytes. In addition to that, make sure your pack has sufficient external storage to allow you to easily grab them. Look out for external zip pockets on the pack, a waist strap and exterior mesh pockets for water bottles.

GET THE RIGHT FIT

The last thing you want while you’re running is a pack that bounces, rubs and digs in - and for this reason, your average backpack just isn’t going to cut it. For running, your pack should have shoulder, chest and waist straps that evenly distribute weight and keep the pack secure, stable and most importantly, still throughout your entire run. Shoulder straps should be padded and wide, while elastic inserts at the chest will help the pack adapt to your movement. Finally, all should be adjustable to help you customise a snug fit around your shoulders and hips.

CONSIDER HYDRATION

Do you need a hydration reservoir? For commuters, this probably isn’t necessary but for long-distance runners, it’s a must-have. Your hydration pack should have an easy-grab bite valve that allows you to take on fluid easily on the go. Again, the principle is the same – only carry what you need and bear in mind that every litre of water you carry is the equivalent of taking on an extra 2 pounds of weight!

TOUGH, WATER-RESISTANT FABRIC

There’s no point carrying a change of clothes if they’re going to be a soggy mess by the time you reach your destination. Look for fabric that is at least water resistant and will keep out the worst of the rain if the weather turns. The fabric should also be tough, with reinforced seams and the ability to withstand carrying heavier loads or being slung on hard or rough surfaces such as your car boot.

For extra comfort, wicking fabric at the back of the pack will help moisture evaporate and reduce the risk of heat, irritation and rubbing.

SAFETY FIRST

If you’re going to be running at night, look for reflective detailing to help you stay safe and be seen. Likewise, if you’re heading off on a trail marathon or into the wilds, a whistle is a key safety consideration and, for FRA races, a mandatory requirement.
