How to choose the right Running Sock

Often overlooked, the right pair of running socks can mean the difference between a great run and a painful, blister-ridden training session. A good technical sock is designed to deliver a comfortable run. Make sure to consider the following features when choosing your running socks.

1. SOCK LENGTH

Socks typically come in four different lengths. Which length you should choose depends on the activity, the weather and your own personal preference and what you feel comfortable in. Always bear in mind that the fit of sock should encompass friction hotspots between your foot and the shoe.

Knee length – These are generally always compression socks which sit just below the knee to encompass the entire calf.

Crew length – These sit above the ankle, and tend to be useful for winter and trail running to provide extra warmth and protect the legs from scratches.

Anklet – These sit just above the ankle. Less skin coverages means that these are great for summer training.

Socklet – These sit under the running shoe and are barely visible. Again these are a great option for summer and gym use.

2. FABRIC

A pair of feet contains 250,000 sweat glands, so it’s essential that your running socks are lightweight with good sweat wicking properties. Look for synthetic technical fabrics such as Coolmax and Nike Dri-Fit which will wick sweat away from the skin and allow it to evaporate. This enhances your in-shoe comfort and reduces the risk of irritation from blisters. Also look for fabrics with anti odour properties to keep your feet fresh and clean.

Merino wool fabrics are also becoming increasingly popular. As well as having great insulating properties, Merino wool has great moisture management and is super soft to the touch.

Some anti blister socks also have a double layer system , reducing friction between the foot and the shoe even further.

3. FIT & COMFORT

Your running socks should fit snugly, like gloves. If in doubt, take a size lower than your normal shoe size. Look for socks with an ergonomic fit which follow the natural contours of the foot without restricting freedom of movement.

Many brands now manufacture socks with “left and right” specific designs for optimum comfort and fit. Also look for added ankle and arch bracing which wraps the foot for maximum security, and low profile toe seams to avoid blistering.

4. CUSHIONING

Many socks feature additional padding on the key impact areas at the heel and ball of the foot, to help absorb shock and provide added protection from blistering. Some runners prefer a well padded sock, whereas other prefer something more minimal – this all comes down to personal preference.

5. COMPRESSION

Compression socks are engineered with gradual muscle compression, supporting and aiding blood flow to the muscles. This is thought to reduce muscle fatigue and speed up recovery. These are cut to just below the knee to encompass the calf muscles.
