Your Complete Guide To Your First Triathlon

Triathlon is one of the fastest-growing endurance sports in the UK, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to elite athletes.

At SportsShoes, we're excited to be expanding our support of the triathlon community by stocking specialist triathlon gear, attending events across the UK and helping athletes find the right equipment to achieve their goals.

What is a Triathlon?

A triathlon combines three disciplines into one continuous race: swimming, cycling and running.

There is also a fourth discipline — transition. This refers to the time spent moving between each discipline, with athletes passing through transition zones to change equipment. Because the race clock never stops, efficient transitions can make a significant difference to your overall time.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ 180km bike

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ 42.2km (marathon) run

What equipment do I need for a Triathlon?

One of the biggest misconceptions about triathlon is that you need lots of specialist equipment. In reality, you can complete your first race with a relatively simple kit list. While many experienced athletes choose to upgrade their gear over time, here's what you'll need to get started.

Swim

For most UK triathlons, you'll swim in open water, which can feel daunting if you've never experienced it before. Having the right kit will help you stay comfortable and confident, and with plenty of practice, it quickly becomes enjoyable. Many beginners find that joining an open water swimming venue or local club is a great way to build confidence while practising in race-like conditions.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Trisuit

A Trisuit can be worn throughout a triathlon to save you from getting changed into an individual swimming, cycling and running kit. It can be worn in the swim and throughout the entire race.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Wetsuit (if your race conditions require it)

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Goggles

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Swim cap

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Towel

Bike

Your bike doesn't need to be a dedicated triathlon bike.

Many athletes complete their first races on road bikes, hybrid bikes or even mountain bikes. The most important thing is that your bike is safe, comfortable and mechanically sound.

You'll need:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ A road, hybrid or gravel bike in good working order

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Helmet

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Water bottles

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Nutrition

Optional extras:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Cycling shoes

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Sunglasses

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Race belt

A race belt is a lightweight, elastic strap that goes around your waist. It holds your race bib (the waterproof paper athlete number officials use to identify you) without using safety pins. You will usually leave it with your bike before the race starts. After your swim, you put the belt on before starting the bike leg, and you continue to wear it right through the run, and then all the way to the finish line.

As you gain experience, you may choose to invest in specialist equipment such as a triathlon bike, aero helmet or race wheels, but these items above are perfect to help you get started.

Run

The Run is the final leg where all your training comes together, so comfort becomes especially important after swimming and cycling.

A pair of running shoes suited to your gait is one of the most important purchases you'll make, helping you stay comfortable and reduce fatigue as you head towards the finish line.

You'll need:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Running shoes

Optional extras:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Sunglasses

What is The Triathlon Transition?

Transition is the area where you swap disciplines.

There are two transitions:

T1
Swim → Bike

T2
Bike → Run

While transition times might seem insignificant, having your kit organised and practising your transitions beforehand can save valuable time and reduce race-day stress.

Triathlon Top Tips

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Choose a sprint-distance event for your first race.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Practise swimming in open water before race day if your event includes it.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Learn how transition works beforehand.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Don't try any new nutrition or equipment on race day.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Arrive early to register, set up your transition area and familiarise yourself with the course.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎●‎ ‎ ‎ Most importantly, enjoy the race.

Why is Triathlon Growing?

Triathlon is becoming increasingly popular because it offers something for everyone. With beginner-friendly race distances, welcoming events and a strong sense of community, more people than ever are discovering the sport.

Training across swimming, cycling and running also brings variety, helping athletes improve endurance, strength and overall fitness while keeping sessions enjoyable. Whether your goal is completing your first event or competing at a high level, triathlon provides a challenge that's both rewarding and achievable.
