Man vs Boat Strava Challenge

Recently, we welcomed ultra-distance athlete Luke Grenfell-Shaw to the team as our Brooks x SportsShoes Trail ambassador.
Luke had a storming year in 2023, winning the Mozart 100k by UTMB in Austria to qualify for the CCC at UTMB. He proved himself on the world stage finishing 8th in the CCC, a truly unbelievable debut at the UTMB finals in Chamonix.

We are looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Luke in 2024, including our latest Strava Segment Challenge.

The Man vs Boat Strava Challenge

Last month, we set Luke the ultimate challenge; an exciting race against the Ullswater Steamer in the Lake District, as he became our latest SportsShoes Strava Shark.

Aim of the Challenge: To get from Glenridding to Howtown before the steamer in a head-to-head race from pier to pier. We also wanted to see how many Strava segments Luke could break along the way!

It's Man vs Boat or in this case, Shark vs Steamer!

The sailing time between these two points (4.5 miles in distance) is roughly 35 minutes, with around 5 mins either side for the boarding and departing of passengers. So, we estimated that Luke would need to complete his journey (7 miles in distance) in around 45 minutes to stand any chance of winning this challenge. A tough ask, but in theory, a reasonably fair race given Luke's trail running pedigree. And just to give him a fighting chance, we armed him with a pair of Catamount Agil, the lightest and fastest Brooks' trail racing shoe to date.
