Brought to you by the team behind the SportsShoes’ Quid Games, The Old Town Showdown was a fast-thinking, strategy-driven urban orienteering challenge set among the historic streets and alleyways of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

It was a running event with a twist. Participants started with a map and a fixed time limit - but no idea where the checkpoints were until the clock began. From that moment on, it was all about making smart decisions: choosing routes, managing effort, and deciding which checkpoints were worth the chase. There was no set course and no single “right” way to race - just each participant’s strategy versus the city, and the clock.

Delivered by SportsShoes and British Orienteering, with support from GORE-TEX® Brand, ASICS, and Silva, the event also formed part of the Edinburgh visit for the Kendal Mountain UK Tour. It featured a vibrant atmosphere, a truly unique setting, and an experience that rewarded sharp thinking as much as strong legs. The winners were Finlay Todd in a blistering time of 29:38 and Claire Ward in an equally impressive 45:33.

And this was Edinburgh in March, so there was proper Scottish weather. As part of the experience, participants had the chance to test ASICS GORE-TEX® Invisible Fit Footwear, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Inspired by the Quid Games, The Old Town Showdown blended running, navigation, and problem-solving into one unforgettable urban race. Whether participants raced flat-out, played it tactically, or simply saw how much ground they could cover, the challenge remained the same: collect as many checkpoints as possible before time ran out.

No prior orienteering experience was needed - just a willingness to think on your feet and take on something a little different. For those who enjoy trail running, urban exploration, or racing with a tactical edge, it proved to be exactly what their training had been missing.
