What to wear for winter running with Rab

Rab athlete, Steph Knapman shares her guide to winter running - from layering systems and insulation to staying dry and comfortable when the temperature drops.

Why do I keep running through winter?

Running in the winter feels different. Trails you know well transform under frost and light snow and the air bites a little harder. To make the most of it, you need to dress smart: layers that work with your effort, not against it. The goal is to stay warm but not overheated and be ready for whatever the season throws at you.

Start with a breathable base layer

Think of this as your second skin. It’s the layer that manages sweat when you’re working hard on cold days. Go for something moisture-wicking and quick-drying, rather than cotton which holds onto dampness. Merino wool or lightweight synthetic fabrics work best. They will keep you warm even when damp and prevent that icy chill when you stop moving.

Top Picks: Rab Force Tee or Sonic Long Sleeve

This is probably the most reached-for item in my wardrobe. It is the one I rely on for almost every Winter run. On milder days, it’s perfect as a single, streamlined layer that keeps me comfortable without overheating. When temperatures drop or the wind begins to bite, I pair it with an insulation layer or a waterproof shell.

 ㅤㅤ

Adaptive warmth that moves with you: insulation

Once the base layer’s sorted, it’s time to add warmth. This is where smart insulation comes in. You want a lightweight, packable insulation layer that you can wear as a technical outer or as a warm mid-layer under a shell in colder weather.

  ㅤㅤ

Top Pick: Rab Xenair Alpine Flex Insulated Jacket

This jacket has one of the nicest fits and it comes in a very lovely ‘Mulberry’ colourway. The Xenair series uses synthetic insulation that breathes as you move and traps heat when you slow down. It’s the kind of jacket you can keep on for the climb and the descent. The low-bulk synthetic fleece side panels offer superb mobility and make it easy to layer.

Protection from the elements: waterproof shell jackets

Acting as your outermost barrier, a waterproof shell shields you from wind, rain, sleet, and sudden mountain changes. A good shell should be lightweight, breathable and packable to ensure you can move fast without carrying unnecessary bulk, while still staying protected when conditions deteriorate.

Top Picks: Rab Downpour Trail Light Waterproof Jacket or the Rab Phantom Waterproof Jacket

I think the Downpour Trail Light strikes the perfect balance, because it is made from a hardwearing GORE-TEX fabric, which is tough enough for long days in persistent rain yet light enough to stash when the weather clears. However, if you want ultralight performance, the Rab Phantom stands out as one of the lightest waterproof shells on the market. The jacket packs neatly into its own hood, shrinking to palm size - perfect for races and fast-and-light missions where every gram counts. Despite its featherweight build, it delivers reliable protection when storms roll in.

What about the bottom half? – Thermal tights

Thermal tights keep warmth in and wind out. You want a tight that provides enough insulation for many cold days without overheating when you're climbing or working hard.

Top Picks: Rab Talus Trail Tights or the Rab Talus Windstopper Tights

The Talus range is great - even when you’re working hard and sweating, the fabric wicks moisture away rather than letting it cling. This is important on cold runs because damp fabric can lead to chill when you slow down or stop. The Talus Trail Tights have a ‘next to skin’ fit giving a streamlined supportive feel without restricting movement. Whilst the Talus Windstopper Tights provide extra wind protection, so they may be a good alternative when tackling exposed ridgelines and summits.

Carrying your winter gear on the trails – running packs

When you’re out on the trails, especially in the cold, wind or mixed weather, you will need a pack for all your running essentials, Your pack needs to feel as natural as your shoes and layers. A pack that bounces, rubs, or causes discomfort will steal focus and energy.

The ideal bag should:

Fit comfortably so it doesn’t shift with every stride or downhill bounce.

Provide easy access to hydration and snacks.

Carry any required safety or weather kit without bulk.

Be suited for the conditions e.g. waterproofing or minimal weight depending on terrain and weather.

Top Picks: Rab Veil 12 Running Vest or the Rab Veil XP 20L

The Veil 12L is suitable for those mid-long distance runs. 12 Litres is generous for a running vest and enough for ‘extra kit’, such as waterproofs, gloves, headtorch, first aid kit, and food and water. If you are heading out on a multi-day adventure, you might need a bigger bag. I would opt for the Veil XP 20L – it has more capacity for larger overnight gear, such as a tent, stove and sleeping bag. It is also made from a waterproof fabric, so you can trust that your kit will stay dry if conditions take a turn for the worse.

Winter accessories and suitable footwear

It’s easy to overlook the basics, but warm gloves, a thermal beanie, and a buff or neck gaiter make a huge difference to comfort. I never leave the house without a pair of gloves in my pack, they’re probably the one piece of kit I couldn’t live without. If you’re racing through the Winter, it may also be wise to carry an extra pair of socks - swapping into dry socks mid-run prevents chill and sore feet (a lesson that I learnt the hard way!). I also swap my summer trail shoes for a pair of shoes with deeper lugs. Good grip is crucial on the wet and muddy British trails.

Top Picks: Rab Transition Windstopper Gloves and the Rab Transition Headband

With the right kit, those cold miles become something to look forward to rather than endure. There is a lot of work to be do throughout the winter months to meet those Spring / Summer goals, so don’t be afraid to get out there. Just remember to dress smart, layer up, and have lots of fun!
